This sentence is pure gold - “History must be that bad poem which rhymes too much.” Love the music recommendations - am now going down a rabbit hole of these songs and listening to Abeer Nehme singing Li Beirut as I write this.

Thanks so much, Sanobar! I'm grateful I read Mahfouz and I now feel like it is a rabbit hole he deliberately placed in his trilogy.

Thank you for this lovely post! I heard Yes'ed Sabahak by Fairuz for the first time sometime last year and instantly loved it. Didn’t look her up though so all of this was very fascinating to read.

Wonderful, wonderful wonderful…thank you so much for writing this. I would also recommend you listen to another contemporary singer, a Syrian Armenian, another minority community member, her name is Lena Chamamyan.

Listen to her rendition of Lamma Bada Yatathna …I find it to be the best. Listen to her other tracks too.

Thank you so much, Sana, for reading and for the recommendation. I love the song and was looking for more versions as it is. Adding her to my list now.
